Who we are

Indiana University has a long tradition of environmental stewardship. Over the years, this commitment has evolved from grassroots support to institutionalized commitments.

With the approval of the IU Climate Action Plan in fall 2023, Sustainability became a centralized unit under the Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities. As a centralized unit, all Sustainability offices across IU campuses have a single reporting line and work to support each other under one leader - the Chief Sustainability Officer.

History of the Office of Sustainability at Indiana University:

Sustainability efforts at IU Indianapolis began in earnest in 2009 with a committee of dedicated students, faculty, and staff. Their early efforts included creating on-campus urban gardens, bringing single stream recycling to campus, and creating learning and engagement opportunities for students.

As a recommendation of this committe, the IU Indianapolis Office of Sustainability was created in 2011 with a dual reporting line to Environmental Health and Safety and the Honors College. In 2014, Sustainability's reporting line changed to the Division of Finance and Administration, elevating Sustainability as equal with the campus' major operational units. With the approval of the IU Climate Action Plan in fall 2023, Sustainability became a centralized unit under the Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities.
