2022 College Football Playoffs Most Sustainable in History of National Championship |
Thanks in part to the assistance of IUPUI Sustainability, the 2022 College Football Playoff is now the most sustainable championship in the history of the event!
IUPUI Sustainability and students collected utility data for a comprehensive greenhouse gas emission analysis, including event-related transportation, accommodations, and venues. In partnership with AES Indiana, renewable energy credits were purchased to power 100% of CFP's electricity needs with renewable wind energy. All unavoidable carbon emissions and water consumption were offset through funding of carbon-sequestering projects.
Playoff Green and the Indianapolis Host Committee funded the creation of a four-year undergraduate sustainability scholarship for an incoming IUPUI freshman. The scholarship will be accompanied by a year-long, paid internship with the IUPUI Office of Sustainability, working in the student's area of interest.
Additionally, the Playoff Green program diverted 80% of all CFP-generated waste from landfill, donated 35,000 meals to local food banks, and donated more than 75,000 pounds of reusable goods to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis. |

What the McKinney Climate Fellows have been up to |
The McKinney Climate Fellows program pairs undergraduate and graduate students with Indiana-based private, public, and nonprofit organizations, where they provide solutions-based sustainability expertise while gaining meaningful hands-on work experience. We'd like you to meet three IUPUI students participating in the climate action program this summer:
- Chelsey Lang has been placed with Hillenbrand where she's been working on a wide variety of sustainability projects, including drafting internal policies and procedures, analyzing utility data, and researching developments in ESG & supply chain regulation.
- Denise Chisveto has been placed with Deaconess Hospital where she is collaborating with multiple departments to explore and implement best practices for recycling, reducing energy and water consumption, and proper waste disposal.
- Anamika Krishnan was placed with Pace Community Action Agency where she is leading community outreach efforts that acknowledge the diverse voices of the tenant-community, tying DEI efforts to their Energy Assistance and Weatherization programs. |

A Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Home a Pollinator Oasis |
If you want a beautiful thriving landscape without the endless summer maintenance, your solution is native plants. With a bit of up-front work, your yard could become an oasis for birds, butterflies, bees, and other pollinators - while also saving you on water, maintenance, and chemicals. Sustainable Landscapes Intern, Keegan Cougill, has done the research and created a step-by-step guide to help homeowners make the switch. |
